Laverne Cox made history this week by becoming the first openly transgender actress to receive an Emmy nomination. Cox got the nod for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Sophia Burset in Netflix’s hit series “Orange is the New Black.” This monumental achievement will surely inspired transgendered individuals everywhere.
Even before the nomination, Cox was quickly becoming one of the most important advocates for the LGBT and specifically transgender community. Last month she became the first openly transgendered person to appear on the cover of Time Magazine. This fall she’ll be doing an extensive college tour giving motivational talks to young people.
“Orange is the New Black” is all about breaking down barriers and Cox is a major part of that goal. This nomination is a mark of their success in opening the hearts and minds of the mainstream. In the words of GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis, “Today, countless transgender youth will hear the message that they can be who they are and still achieve their dreams – nothing is out of reach. Laverne’s success on a hit series is a clear indication that audiences are ready for more trans characters on television.”
Congratulations, Laverne, on your milestone nomination!
